Cascina Roccalini, Barbaresco 2018

Flag of Italy

Cascina Roccalini has been in the Veglio family since 1920. Today, it is headed up by 4th generation Paolo Veglio, who recently gained fully biodynamic status for his tiny estate in the heart of Barbaresco, Piedmont. Tending and caring for the vines totally by hand, Paolo is able to ensure that the vineyard is impeccably looked after and the grapes it produces are second-to-none. The result of his care and attention is evident in his show-stopping wines. His Barbarbesco 2018 is made from 100% Nebbiolo, fermented in stainless steel before spending 12 months in Slovenian grandi botti. Rich, joyful and balanced, it's packed with notes of violet, cinnamon and nutmeg; leading into a smouldering nose of redcurrant, raspberry and baking spice. The palate is well-structured, with a bright acidity and high tannin which show this wine's ability to age. The palate has flavours of sweet basil, white pepper, raisin, chocolate and black cherry; suffice it to say it's an absolute marvel and a wine best enjoyed with beef or game.
